Program Information

MED-Project now offers safe, free, and convenient services to dispose of lancets, syringes, needles, auto-injectors, and other injectable products in California.

New California state legislation requires that patients be provided with information on the proper disposal of sharps products. To address the need to keep unwanted sharps safely out of the reach of children and pets and out of communities’ landfills, MED-PROJECT is rolling out new programs across California.

MED-Project is a nonprofit organization approved by the state of California to provide resources for healthcare providers and pharmacies, and supplies and services for patients that utilize sharps products.

  • MED-Project operates a safe and free Household Sharps Take-Back Program so patients can conveniently mail-back unwanted or used sharps for safe disposal.
  • In 2018, Senate Bill 212 was enacted in California to ensure the safe disposal of sharps and provide all sharps users with free and convenient options that keep our communities and environment safe.
  • Residents who purchase sharps products can order free MED-Project sharps mail-back packages online at med-project.org or by calling the MED-Project Call Center at (844) MED-PROJECT / (844) 633-7765.
  • Additional MED-Project sharps mail-back packages can be ordered free online or through the call center as needed. Each MED-Project sharps mail-back package contains a one-quart sharps container that can hold up to 500 needles, so only order what is needed.
  • When the sharps containers are full, return the containers by placing the free, pre-paid postage sharps mail-back package in a USPS postal service mailbox.
