MED-PROJECT PROVIDES SAFE, FREE, AND CONVENIENT MEDICATION DISPOSAL OPTIONS FOR NEW YORK STATE RESIDENTS
Over 1,400 MED-Project drop boxes for home-generated unwanted medication now available across the state

New York residents who use medication to treat medical conditions now have access to a free statewide program to dispose of unwanted household medication safely and conveniently. This program, implemented and managed by the Medication Education & Disposal Project (MED-Project), follows the passage of the New York State Drug Take Back Act.

MED-Project now provides for over 1,400 secure medication drop boxes at retail pharmacies, law enforcement agencies, hospitals, and long-term care facilities throughout New York state for residents to drop off household unwanted or unneeded medications. MED-Project also offers a convenient mail-back program where New Yorkers can order free mail-back packages for easy disposal from home or obtain one from a participating mail-back distribution location. In addition, many retail pharmacies across the state provide in-store information to customers about how to obtain a free mail-back package for unwanted medication.

“This medication take-back program provides convenience for consumers and value to the community,” said Dr. Victoria Travis, National Program Director for MED-Project. “With over 1,400 medication drop boxes statewide, as well as the option to request a mail-back package from the convenience of your home, we’re making it easy for New Yorkers to dispose of their household medication, while preventing misuse by others.”

New Yorkers looking for a convenient medication drop box location, mail-back distribution location, or wanting to order a free mail-back package can visit med-project.org or call (844) MED-PROJECT (TTY: 711). To protect their privacy, residents are reminded to remove all personally identifiable information from medication labels or packaging before disposing of unwanted medication.

MED-Project’s medication disposal program was approved under the authority of the New York Department of Health (NY DOH), Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE) on June 8, 2022.
