If you received specific disposal instructions from your healthcare provider (e.g., doctor, pharmacist) for your unused or expired medicine, you should follow those instructions to dispose of your medicine.  Follow safe disposal instructions if found on the label, package, or package insert.

Adhering to your medication routine means taking your medicine as directed or as prescribed – the right dose, at the right time, in the right way.

For safety reasons, there are a few, select medicines with specific instructions to immediately flush down the toilet only if a drug take back option is not readily available. The Washington Department of Health has determined that the Safe Medication Return Program is a readily available drug take back option.

If you have questions about any medication or your health, please contact your healthcare provider.
